Twin Cities Marathon/Bob Brock
Pilcher and Martin will be part of history, as the .US National Road Racing Championships mark the first time a single race will serve as both a USA Track & Field open national championship and a USATF masters national championship.
Pilcher, a three-time Masters Runner of the Year (2010, 2011, 2012) joins seven-time Masters Runner of the Year (2002, 2007-12) Doug Goodhue (Milford, Mich.), Paul Carlin (Indianapolis, Ind.) and three-time Masters Runner of the Year (2005, 2011, 2012.) Terry McCluskey (Vienna, Ohio) as favorites for the men’s race.
On the women’s side, Martin is a strong contender, having been named USATF Athlete of the Week in October. Martin has three national titles under her belt in 2013, capturing the Masters 8K, 10K and 1-Mile Road Championships and age-grading at 94% and above for all three races. For her career, Martin has nine American records and two World Records, and is an 11-time Masters Runner of the Year (2002-2012) honoree.
Other female masters athletes who will challenge Martin for the title include Heide Moebius (Lancaster, Pa.) and Tina Klein (Atlanta, Ga.).
Nearly half the masters field is represented by local D.C. area athletes, with many participants representing the Potomac Valley Track Club.
Sunday’s course will lend itself to record-setting performances, as much of Old Town Alexandria provides a flat surface on an infrequently-run course for masters athletes. A full listing of masters athletes competing in Alexandria on Sunday can be found here.
