GVSU Cross Country Extends Regional Title Streaks

SOMERS, Wis. - The Grand Valley State cross country teams both came away with regional championships at the 2013 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship on Saturday (Nov. 9) at the Wayne E. Dannehl Cross Country Course. For the Laker women, it was the 13th straight regional crown, while the men brought home their 12th straight.
The women's team entered the meet ranked number one in the nation and will certainly keep those high standards, as the Laker women dominated the field. GVSU tallied only 42 points, easily outdistancing GLIAC rival Saginaw Valley State in second with 103 points.
All seven student-athletes on the women's side will be honored as USTFCCCA All-Region honorees after all seven finished inside the top 25 of the final results.
Leading the way for the Lakers was Jessica Janecke, who came across the line in second with a time of 21:32 on the 6k course. The runner-up from the GLIAC Championship, Allyson Winchester, was sixth with a time of 21:41. Just behind her was Courtney Brewis in seventh with a time of 21:43. Rounding out the scoring for the Lakers was Kendra Foley in 12th (21:59) and Madie Rodts in 15th (22:04). Also competing for the Lakers, but finishing outside the top five for GVSU, was Jordan Chester in 17th (22:11) and Molly Slavens in 24th (22:17).
Winning the individual title on the women's side was Ferris State's Samantha Johnson in a time of 21:22.
Joining the Laker women at the 2013 NCAA Division II National Championships will be SVSU, Hillsdale (132 points) and Lewis (174 points) as the top four teams all earn bids to the championship meet.
On the men's side, the Lakers, who entered the meet #3 in the country in the USTFCCCA rankings, had a hard-fought race with 10th-ranked Southern Indiana. GVSU's 53 points was enough to take home the crown ahead of USI (64 points).
The men's team claimed their 12th straight regional title behind the strength of Alan Peterson, who finished second on the 10k course in a time of 31:20. Just behind him was GLIAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year Brent Showerman, who was in fifth with a time of 31:24. Chris May was the highest-finishing freshman at the meet, crossing the line in 12th with a time of 32:02. The scoring for the Lakers was rounded out by Kyle Flores in 15th (32:06) and Chad Cini in 19th (32:13). The top five Lakers will all earn USTFCCCA All-Region honors for placing in the top 25.
Also competing for the Lakers were Josh Moskalewski, who finished 42nd (32:45), and Spencer Pageau, who finished 69th (33:26).
Winning the individual title on the men's side was Southern Indiana's Johnnie Guy with a time of 31:06.
Joining GVSU and USI at the 2013 NCAA Division II National Championships will be Cedarville (114 points) and Ferris State (148 points) by virtue of finishing in the top four.
Both GVSU cross country teams will now prepare for the national championship meet, which will take place on Saturday, November 23rd in Spokane, Wash.
