BOYNE CITY, MICHIGAN -- The Boyne City Cross Country team hosted the Boyne Valley Lodge Invitational on September 11, 2013. The meet was run at the Boyne Valley Lodge in Walloon Lake.
The highlight race is the 2-person Coed Relay. The runners alternate running the 1.5 mile loop until both have run 3 miles. This race is then scored using the top 3 relay teams from each school. The race had a record number of relay teams -- 98 total. The winning relay team of Kayla Keane and Josh Wojan of East Jordan High School set a new course record in a time of 34:14. The previous record was held by Kayla Keane and Luke Hawley of East Jordan, which they set in 2011 with a time of 34:54.
Boyne City finished 4th overall in the relay team scoring. This was Boyne City's best finish at this meet in several years. For the overall team title, Grand Traverse Academy broke Harbor Springs’ string of consecutive wins. The top 15 relay teams each earned medals.
A three-mile High School “Open Race” also was held. The boys and girls ran at the same time, but were split out for awards. There were a total of 55 runners in the open race.
There were also a record number of younger runners in the Middle School “Open Race”. The race is scored by taking the top 5 runners from each school, no matter the gender. Boyne City's team won this race. Scoring runners for Boyne City were Cliff Maginity, 2nd overall; John Henry Sosa in 3rd; Avery Stadt in 10th; Emily Sterling placing 15th and Riley Minier placing 18th -- for a total of 48 points. This is a repeat win for Boyne City's middle school team.
