Tegenkamp defended his 2012 title after running in the lead pack throughout the race and pulling ahead of his competitors over the final mile to cross the line first in 1:00:20. Tegenkamp is the first athlete since Dan Browne (2001-2002) to win back-to-back USA 20 km titles.

“This field was stacked with veteran runners, and it wasn’t a rhythm race. It was just a grinding, suffering fartlek. It is a great and satisfying performance, and a trial effort going into Chicago,” Tegenkamp said. “I knew whatever move I made, I would have to make it and go all the way to the line. From four miles out, it was managing that effort.”

Tegenkamp’s victory increased his lead in the USA Running Circuit standings, as he now has 50 total points, with a 17-point lead over second place Mo Trafeh. Tegenkamp has his marathon debut planned for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on Oct. 13, and is eligible to compete at the .US National Road Racing Championships in Alexandria, Va. on Nov. 17.

Now in its 12th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
