November 17, 2012 - All season, he had been building up to this. Sophomore Joshua Mirth opened the season with a bang, and showed huge improvement in his times in both 8K and 10K races.
He was named GLIAC Runner of the Week during the regular season. He was a top finisher at both the conference meet and regional meet. Then Saturday in Joplin, Missouri, Mirth put the perfect topping on his 2012 season.
Mirth finished 31st overall at the NCAA Division II Men's Cross Country championships with a time of 30:10.7. His finish earned him All-American status for the season, the first Charger athlete to earn that distinction in the 2012-13 athletic year. Mirth is also the first Hillsdale College men's cross country runner to earn All-American honors since Tim Jagielski did it in 2008.
"Josh ran a really smart race. As a young guy he was able to control his nerves and go out in the first mile in a respectable time and then move from around 90th place up through the pack without panic," said men's cross country coach Jeff Forino. "It showed maturity as a runner. A bunch of guys went out fast and dropped off. We are really proud of Joshua and anticipate a lot of the same in the future from him."
Mirth was the second-fastest runner at the national meet from a school from the Midwest Region.
