2012-13 Track and Field Competitions Unveiled as Titans to Host 2013 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships

DETROIT (11/16/2012) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's track and field schedule is now set with the competition starting on Dec. 7 as the Titans travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Blue and Gold Invitational. The track schedule will also include hosting the 2013 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Eastern Michigan as Detroit will host the outdoor event for the first time in school history.

“Hosting the conference championships gives us an opportunity to represent the Horizon League and a chance for more of our alumni, fans, and parents to come and watch our team compete,” said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Guy Murray.

The Titans have nine meets lined up for the indoor season before the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 23-24 in Youngstown, Ohio. Five of those meets will be in the state of Michigan with a pair of meets at both Grand Valley State (Feb. 8-9 and Feb. 15) and Michigan (Jan. 19 and Feb. 16).

Central Michigan will host the team's second indoor meet of the season on Jan. 11 in Mount Pleasant. IPFW (Jan. 26) and Notre Dame (Dec. 7) each have a meet scheduled, while the University of Windsor will welcome a select group of Titans on Feb. 8-9. Youngstown State also hosts another indoor meet on Feb. 1-2, before the HL Championships at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS).

“We have been training in preparation for the start of a new season since arriving on campus and we are anxious to get started," said Murray, who begins his 20th season as the head man of the track and field teams at Detroit. "We have our traditionally scheduled meets and have added new challenges that will give us new opportunities for competition.”

The outdoor season begins on March 29-30 as Eastern Illinois University will host the Big Blue Classic in Charleston, Ill. UDM will then head to the Toledo Collegiate Challenge on March 30 before hosting the 8th Annual Dual vs. Oakland at Titan Field on April 6.

Detroit will send several individuals out west to California to compete in the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge, hosted by Sacramento State from April 11-13. Also in that time frame, the Titans will split up in different directions with meets hosted by Sienna Heights and Bucknell's Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pa.

A local trip for Detroit follows with the EMU Twilight on April 19-20. The final weekend of preparation before the Horizon League Outdoor Championships will give Coach Murray a number of meets to send his athletes. Hillsdale will host a meet on April 25-27, while the historic Drake Relays will also be that same weekend, and Central Michigan will welcome others to the Lyle Bennett Open.

The moment to shine will occur on May 3-5 as the Titans host the Horizon League Outdoor Championships at Eastern Michigan's Bowen Field House in Ypsilanti.

It will be the first time the Titans will host the outdoor championships after Detroit served as hosts for the 2001, 2007, and 2010 Horizon League Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor. The Detroit cross country team hosted the conference championships in 1990, 1999, and 2009.
