NEW ORLEANS, La. -- After leading the Wolverines to their second straight NCAA Great Lakes Region title, University of Michigan women's cross country head coach Mike McGuire earned his second consecutive and seventh career Regional Coach of the Year honor, the U.S. Track& Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced on Tuesday (Nov.13).
In his 21st season at the helm of the program, McGuire guided Michigan to its ninth regional crown in program history -- eight of which have come during his tenure. At this year's regional meet, McGuire directed five Wolverines to All-Great Lakes Region honors, as they each finished in the top 15.
Under McGuire, Michigan has posted 16 top-two finishes at the Great Lakes Regional, including eight winning performances.
The regional recognition comes after McGuire received his ninth Big Ten Coach of the Year award for leading Michigan to its first Big Ten title since 2006.
The Wolverines, who are ranked No. 6 in the recent USTFCCCA Division I National Coaches Poll, will conclude the season at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 17. The 6,000-meter event is set for a noon start at Louisville's E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park.
