MADISON, Wisc. (11/9/2012) -- The UDM women's cross country team ended the 2012 season with its best finish in eight years at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, held at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course on the campus of the University of Wisconsin on Friday afternoon.
“The regional is as tough an NCAA event as there is,” said head coach Guy Murray. “We did a nice job with some good improvements to finish off the season and overcoming some big challenges.”
Detroit totaled 804 points to take 28th in the 6k race marking the Titans best finish since placing 26th with 691 points in 2004.
Junior Louisa Coppola also did something that no Titan has done in the last few years as she posted a top-100 finish earning 75th in 21:55. It was the best finish by a UDM harrier since Andrea Karl was 73rd in 2004.
She was also the first top-100 performer since Karl was 77th the following year. Her time was the third best 6k in Titan history and the eighth highest regional finish.
“Louisa ran as well as we hoped and did a good job breaking into the top 75,” added Coach Murray.
Senior Katrina Oberski set a PR in her final cross country run taking 167th in 23:19. It was a 20-spot improvement over her career best at the event and she also became just the 12th Titan in school history to run in four NCAA Regionals.
“Katrina had a very good senior season and really improved a lot in her career,” said Coach Murray.
Three more Titans tallied career marks as sophomore Sara Taylor was 182nd in 23:53, while senior Sarah Martinez clocked a 24:02 for 186th. Taylor's run was a four-minute lowering and was also 42 places better than last season, while Martinez improved by 25 spots.
“Sara has been the find of the season and really stepped in to help make this a strong year,” said Coach Murray. “She had a huge improvement at this race and has the potential for more. Sarah (Martinez) had a good steady senior season and is ready for more fast times on the track.”
Senior Olivia Smid was the fifth Titan in at a 6k career-best 24:12 for 194th, while junior Torrie Eger hit a 6k personal record with a 25:11 run. Freshman Haley Morairty made her debut at the regional with a 25:30 time.
The Titan distance runners will now look to take this strong cross country season to the track with indoor track & field starting in December.
