Madison, Wis. (EMUEagles.com) – The MAC Champion Eastern Michigan University Men's Cross Country Team traveled to Madison, Wis. Friday, Nov. 9, to compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
Despite two-time MAC Champion Terefe Ejigu bowing out of the race following the 8K mark of the 10K race, the Eagles still found a way to finish 13th out of the 30-team field with a team score of 367, three spots higher than one year ago.
First-team All-MAC sophomore Daryl Smith led the Eagles with a 31:58 mark, good enough for 34th overall out of 204 participants. Second-team All-MAC runner Harry Dixon followed Smith with a 42nd-place finish, posting a time of 32:13.
Rounding out the top 5 runners for the Eagles were Warren Witchell, Cody Chabola, and Nick Petro who finished 72nd, 108th, and 111th, respectively.
Freshman Willy Fink also turned in a time of 34:34 for Eastern.
Ejigu, the Eagles top runner all year, was running well in fifth at the 8K mark with a split time of 24:15, but the standout senior was unable to finish the race.
The host team University of Wisconsin took home the hardware in both the team and individual categories. Led by Mohammed Ahmed, the top individual finisher with a time of 30:37, the Badgers team score of 43 was good enough to win the meet.
