EMU - Women's Cross Country Takes Fifth at MAC Championship

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team finished fifth Saturday, Oct. 27, at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championship hosted by the University at Buffalo.



The Eagles' fifth place performance marks the second consecutive year that EMU has turned in a fifth place result in the team competition. The Eagles finished with the top five runners turning in a combined team score of 144.



Individually, sophomore Victoria Voronko led the way for the Eagles turning in a fifth place finish with a time of 21:47.7. The fifth place finish also marks the second consecutive year that she has earned All-MAC First Team honors, having finished fourth a year ago..



Voronko's two MAC performances mark the best back-to-back Championship performances since 1999 and 2000 when Domtilla Mwei finished as the runner-up both years.



Behind Voronko, Kayla Pfund finished 19th overall with 22:16.2 in her first MAC Championship. Rounding out the top five scorers for the Eagles were Morgan Churchwell, Rachel Quaintance and Cara Smock, as thay finished 35th, 35th and 51st respectively.



Nationally ranked #20 Toledo won the team title for the third consecutive year, as the Rockets placed all five of their top scorers in the top 10 to give UT a winning tally of 24 points. Rockets Head Coach Kevin Hadsell was voted MAC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his career.



Ohio's Julie Accurso took the individual title for the second consecutive year with a winning time of 20:48.4.



The Eagles season will continue with their second home meet of the season November 1 at the EMU Open. The Open will mark the final tune-up of the season before heading to Madison, Wisconsin for the 2012 NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet on Nov. 9.
