Jul. 23, 2012 RMDC Weekend Running and Racing Recap - July 20-22 Leave a Comment

This past weekend was full of many races around the state of Michigan.

The Bear River Crawl, held in Petoskey ran through the Bear River Valley Recreation Area. The male overall 5k winner and Petoskey resident, Logan Hensley crossed the line in 16:15. Finishing second overall was Thomas Varslembrouck, also of Petoskey, in 16:18. Meredith Coughlin of Tipp City, Ohio was the female overall winner, finishing the 5k course in 20:12. In another close finish, second place female finisher Anna Nuechterlein ran 20:15 to take 15th overall. Check out some great RunMichigan.com photos from this event here.

In the 10k, Alexander Chappars was first to cross the line in 34:10. Behind Chappars was Luke Hawley of East Jordan, Michigan finishing in 35:52. Kayla Keane was the first female across the line with her time of 42:35. Second place female, Meagan Murphy finished 10th overall in a time of 44:36.

In Midland, The River Run 5k was held on Saturday, July 21. Overall winner Jeff Wilson won the race in a time of 16:04. Second place finisher, Ben Shaffer of Big Rapids finished the 5k race in 16:27. Male master’s winner and Saginaw resident, Manny Sanchez ran 19:17 to take 13th place overall. The female overall winner was Maggie Retelle of Midland. Retelle completed the course in 18:48 to take 8th place overall. Cadillac’s Kersten Westdorp crossed the line in 19:20 to take second place for the women and 14th overall. The female master’s champion was Teresa Martin of Freeland in a time of 24:21.

The Gopher The Gold 5k/10k took place Saturday. Located in River Bends Park in Shelby Township, there were several quick times despite the hilly terrain. Jason Bmschen placed first overall in the 5k crossing the line in 16:50. Taking second overall, Tim Rowland finished in 17:02. Livonia resident, Adan Gomez was the male master’s champion as he took 6th place overall in 19:21. Brittany Johnson of Oxford was the first female to cross the line, finishing in a time of 19:27. Brittany’s sister, Chelsea, finished less than 1 second behind her. Both Brittany and Chelsea will be attending Wayne State University this fall to be members of the WSU cross Country and Track and Field teams.

In the 10K, Stephen Biebelhausen of Rochester was the male overall winner, crossing the line in 34:52. Second place belonged to Cory Steuben, finishing in 36:01. Rosie Mascoli from Lebanon, Pennsylvania took home the women’s overall title with a time of 38:44. Finishing behind Mascoli, second place finisher and Romeo resident, Laura Hrabovsky crossed the line in 42:36.

The Road Runner Classic, held at Maybury State Park in Northville Saturday featured an 8K race. Andrew Perinksy of Dexter won the 8K in 27:44. Crossing the line second, Northville’s Colin Riley ran 28:22. Female overall champion, Katie Singer of Detroit, finished 27th overall in a time of 35:36. Second place female Melissa Armat of Wyandotte finished in 37:06 to take 33rd overall.

The He Tried/ She Tried…We Tried triathlon was on Sunday, July 22. Held at the Waterloo Recreation Area, there were Olympic, Sprint and Duathlon competitions to choose from.

In the Olympic Team finish, the first place female/female team was the team of Amanda and Sara Vogler with their combined time of 6:00:18. Amanda of Beverly Hills, MI finished 17th overall in 2:54:02 while Sara of Ann Arbor finished in 3:06:16 taking 26th overall. The male/male team of Jon Ruud and Jeff Plotzke claimed first place in their division with a cumulative time of 5:15:17. Ruud took 4th overall in 2:29:03 while Plotzke was 10th in 2:46:14. Finally, in the male/female division, Adam and Christine Rosender took home the overall champion prize. Adam placed second overall in 2:23:22 while Christine was 10th in 2:40:59. Their combined score of 5:04:321 was the fastest Olympic time of the day.

For the Sprint Team finish, the team of Mary Biber and Melanie Burzynski won the female/female division with a cumulative time of 2:56:51. Biber completed the course in 1:27:47 to take 46th overall while teammate Burzynski finished 50th in 1:29:03. The male/male team scoring featured Ray Esper of Ann Arbor and Robert Knight of Superior Twp. Taking home the title. Esper finished in 1:23:13 to take 33rd while Knight was 34th in 1:24:14. Jonathan Russell and Bonita Ohye of Ann Arbor won the male/female division in the fastest Sprint time of the day. Finishing in a combined 2:23:30, Russell was first overall in 1:05:17 while Ohye was 1:18:13 to take 20th.

The Duathlon was also completed at this event. The female/female division winner was the team of Krista Morris and Kelten Kint. Morris crossed the line in 1:12:21 for a 5th place finish while Kint went on to take 8th in 1:19:12. Matt and Ben Wittbrodt took home the male/male division title as well as having the fastest Duathlon time of the day. Matt was 4th in 1:04:48 and Ben was 6th in 1:13:45. The male/female division was won by Rob Cadena of Dearborn and Laura Beard of Okemos. Their combined time of 2:41:48 was comprised by a second place, 59:14 performance by Cadena and a 1:42:33, 20th place finish by Beard.
