Michigan Weekend Running and Racing Recap - June 22-24

There were several exciting races held this past weekend in Michigan.
The DMC River Days 5K race was held in downtown Detroit on Saturday, June 23. Alex Townsend, former Wayne State Cross Country and Track Student-Athlete won the Men’s 5k with his time of 15:55. This was Alex’s second straight year winning the race. David Chomet took 2nd overall and 1st in the men's Masters division with a time of 16:21. In the Women’s race, first place went to Angela Mathews with her time of 17:33. Mathews is the Detroit Country Day High School Assistant Distance Coach.
The 2012 Heart of Detroit 5K and 10K took place in downtown Detroit on Sunday. In the Men’s 5K, Matthew Robin of Rockwood, Michigan won the race with his time of 17:17. Allie Lucas was first place on the women’s side with a time of 20:30. The Men’s overall winner was Jamieson Hatt of Kingsville, Ontario with a time of 36:44, beating the competition by a full minute. The Women’s 10K winner and 8th overall went to Danielle Miller with a time of 41:59.
The 10th Annual Solstice Run took place in Northville on Saturday. Races at this event included a 5K, 10K and 10 Mile, as well as the Maui Mile.
The 10 Mile Run was won by Luke Humphrey of Royal Oak in a time of 52:26. Clint Verran took second place with his time of 52:43, narrowly defeating third place finisher, Richard Swor who came in at 52:48. Patricia Murray won the Women’s 10 Mile in 1:06:17, over one minute faster than second place finisher, Tammy Nowik.
Chad Cini of Northville ran away with the 10K victory with his time of 33:49. Rochester’s Jackie Rzepecki won the Women’s 10K in 37:49.
The Men’s 5K was won by Adam Kern of Ann Arbor in 16:00. The first place Women’s finisher in the 5K, Victoria Voronko of Ypsilanti was 8th place overall and ran a time of 18:10.
The 2012 Clawson Freedom Run 5k was held Sunday the 24th in Clawson. Ryan Beck of Royal Oak was the Men’s overall winner in a time of 17:04. Second place went to Alex Fauer of Macomb in 17:27. In the Women’s Race, Stephanie Kokoszka was the winner in 19:32 while 15 year-old Kaitlyn Pizzo was the second overall Women’s finisher in 20:12.
In one of the more scenic races in the state the Charlevoix Marathon was home to a 5K, 10K Half and Full Marathon.
Kevin Smith was the Overall Men’s 5k Winner in a time of 15:52. Second place finisher Nick Hall finished in 16:58. Erica Westbrook finished first in the Women’s 5K in 20:21 and Stephanie Eusebi ran 21:42 to take second place.
The 10K Men’s winner was Trevor Drost in 38:21 while Jacob Wimmer was second in 38:51. For the Women in the 10K, Michelle Weymouth was the first Women’s finisher and fourth overall with a time of 41:36. Linda Walsh was the second Women’s 10K finisher in 42:59.
The Half Marathon Men’s winner was Jason Lafave of Sanford MI with a time of 1:16:30, defeating Nathan Mudge by a mere 15 seconds. Theresa Martin of Rochester was the first Female finisher in 1:26:37. And in the full Marathon, Kenneth Brooks won the Men’s Overall Title with a time of 2:47:32. The Women’s Marathon champion was Tasha O’Malley in 3:10:56.
