Provided by U of M Site: Des Moines, Iowa (Drake Stadium) DES MOINES, Iowa -- Junior/sophomore Jillian Smith (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) of the University of Michigan women's track and field team was just one spot shy of qualifying for the finals in the 1,500-meter run, finishing 13th on the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday (June 7) at Drake University's Drake Stadium. Smith finished seventh in her heat of the semifinals in a personal-best time of 4:13.59, earning All-America second team honors. Smith becomes the ninth All-American in program history in the 1,500-meter run and first since Nicole Edwards in 2008. Rebecca Tracy of Notre Dame edged Smith with her time of 4:13.48 to secure the 12th spot in Saturday's (June 9) finals. Stony Brook's Lucy Van Dalen finished first in the event with a time of 4:11.69. Smith joins fifth-year senior Emily Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore) and junior/sophomore Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western), who landed on the All-America second team list during yesterday's (Wednesday, June 6) competition. Pendleton finished 12th in the discus, while Tobel placed 10th in the pole vault. Michigan will not have any athletes competing in the final two day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines.
