MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan senior thrower Ryan McCullough (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS) has been named the Mid-American Conference's Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
McCullough is the first CMU student-athlete to earn the honor during the 2012 outdoor track and field season.
En route to winning the hammer throw at the season-opening LSU Relays on Friday, McCullough broke his own school record with a mark of 204-02. He had previously set the school record last season with a mark of 202-05. His mark was just shy of eight feet longer than that of the runner-up. According to the Track and Field Results Reporting System, McCullough ranks 12th in Division I and first among Mid-American Conference student-athletes in the hammer throw.
McCullough earns the conference's weekly honor for the second time this year, the first coming during the indoor season.
CMU has collected a total of six athlete of the week honors this season.
The Chippewas' men's and women's teams will travel to Toledo this weekend for the Toledo Collegiate Challenge on Saturday.
