Lewis Sets New UDM Standard in Weight Throw on Day One

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The 2012 Horizon League Track and Field Indoor Championships began at the beautiful new Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) facility located on the campus of Youngstown State on Saturday. Eric Lewis highlighted the first day of competition setting a new school record in the weight throw capturing 10 team points and a first place finish in the event for the Titans.
Lewis tossed the weight a new UDM record, 17.67m, besting the previous school mark of 17.36 held by Bryan Grider. Lewis had his first throw reach a distance of 16.04m and his second travel 17.22m. in his final throw in qualifying, Lewis threw 17.44m and in second place heading into the three throws in the finals. Lewis then came out with his school-shattering mark that stood for a first place finish for Detroit's top finish on the day.
After day one, the Detroit men sit in fifth place overall with 17 points.
In the long jump, Ja'Quan Patterson finished third taking home six Titan points with a final jump of 7.09m and a new PR to go with it.
The final Detroit points on the day came in the Distance Medley Relay as Bob Radlich, Joe Raffin, Chris Smalley and George Holman finished with a time of 10:32.59 in sixth place and the single point.
In other events, the pentathlon saw Taylor Hennrick win the 60m dash with a time of 7.33, a mark that was just .01 off his PR. Hennrick took to the long jump in the second event and his leap of 6.30m put him in the early lead by four points. Hennrick also set another PR in the high jump with a 1.75m jump and currently sits in fourth place with 2,497 points and the 60m hurdles, the pole vault and 1000m run still to come on day two.
In the 60m hurdles, Aviram Campbell and Steven Ivanics qualified for the final rounds Sunday while Vushaun Landrum in the 60m dash will also look for the top spot on the second day. Landrum also qualified in the 200m race.
There were many qualifying races that included new PR's as Anthony Donald (400m - 50.54), Vince Lefler (400m - 50.09), Alex Harris (5000m – 14:49.93), Ryan Hofsess (800m Indoor PR – 2:00.93), Ylli Alla (5000m - 15:56.14) and Erik Westbrook (5000m Indoor PR - 15:52.77). all set new personal bests. .
The second day of competition will take place on Sunday with LIVE RESULTS available and a live free online stream provided by HLN that will start at 1:00 p.m.
