GVSU Men - Men Finish Day One of Indiana Relays

Bloomington, Ind. - Four Lakers off the men's track and field squad finished in the top 10 at day one of the Indiana Relays on Friday (Jan. 27). Bret Myers was the only athlete to hit a provisional qualifying mark on the day. Day two will be completed on Saturday (Jan. 28) at Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse.
The competition at the meet is mostly Division I institutions, with a handful of Division II teams also participating.
Myers cleared 4.75 meters (15'7") in the pole vault to finished in seventh place and hit an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark.
In the 60 meter dash, Xavier Parnell came within a thousandth of a second to hitting a provisional qualifying mark, finishing 12th in the preliminaries with a time of 6.96 seconds. He'll run in the finals for the event on Saturday.
GVSU had four top 10 finishes on day one including Steve Reives in the triple jump, who had a 14.15 meter (46'5.25") mark to finish in seventh place. Brent Brock finished 10th in the long jump with a leap of 6.55 meters (21'6") while Reives was just behind in that event, finishing 16th with a distance of 6.26 meters (20'6.5").
In the high jump, Patrick Livengood finished in sixth place after clearing a height of 1.98 meters (6'6") while the best finish of the day on the men's side was Andrew Gorley in the weight throw, who finished in fourth with a toss of 17.38 meters (57'0.25"). Also with good finishes in the weight throw were Donny Stiffler who came in 10th at 16.36 meters (53'8.25") and Lee VanKampen who had a throw of 15.84 meters (51'11.75").
Parnell recorded his second top 15 finish of the day in the 200 meter dash, placing 13th with a time of 22.38 seconds while Natahaniel Hammersmith finished 17th in the event in a time of 22.54 seconds.
