Allendale, Mich. - It was a record-breaking day for senior Daniel Vanek at the Mike Lints Alumni Open in the Kelly Family Sports Center on Friday (Jan. 20). His throw of 19.09 meters (62'7.75") in the shot put was a GVSU and Kelly Family Sports Center record.
The throw broke his own school record of 18.59 meters that he set last year while the Kelly Family Sports Center record he broke was only a week old, set last weekend by John Ybarra (19.00 meters).
The throw was an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark for the defending national champion, and is the top throw in the country by nearly three feet.
The other winners on the men's side of the meet were freshmen Brent Brock in the triple jump (13.62 meters) and Nathan Fraeyman in the 400 meter dash (50.00 seconds).
Freshman Trent Chappell had a leap of 2.07 meters in the high jump to give him a second place finish and a provisional qualifying mark along with a personal best. Junior Raphael Gelo had the same accolades from his 4.80 meter clear in the pole vault to place second.
Junior Donny Stiffler had a pair of top five finishes, placing fourth in the shot put (16.15 meters) for a provisional mark and a third place finish in the weight throw (17.17 meters).
Sophomore Chris Teitsma recorded a personal best in the 400 meter dash, crossing the line in 50.16 seconds.
One other Kelly Family Sports Center record fell on Friday as former University of Michigan athlete Jeff Porter broke his own building record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 7.66 seconds. He had recorded a time of 7.75 seconds in the event last weekend.
The men's track and field team will next head to the Indiana University Relays in Bloomington, Ind. on Friday (Jan. 27) and Saturday (Jan. 28). Friday's action begins at 3 p.m.
