Oakland Finishes Strong at Chip Invite

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Lia Jones finished first in the 3,000-meter run, Breanna Peabody crossed the line first in the 60-meter hurdles and David Magnotte finished first in the 800-meter run as the Oakland men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Chip Invite hosted by Central Michigan Friday night at Jack Skoog Indoor Track.
"This time of year we expect inconsistency and that's what we are seeing at this point," said head coach Paul Rice. "Every week we continue to learn more about where we are and what work needs to be done."
The women finished third totaling 72 points behind Central Michigan with 187 and Detroit with 107. Aquinas came in fourth with 53 points and Macomb Community College came in fifth with 24 points. The men finished fourth with 44.33 points behind Central Michigan with 217.66, Detroit with 84 points and Aquinas with 74 points. Macomb finished fifth with seven points.
Jones won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:10.39 and also finished second in the 1 mile run with a time of 5:09.25. Peabody finished first in the 60-meter hurdles with a finals time of 8.95, shaving 0.15 seconds from her preliminary time. Desiree Pettiford finished second in the 200-meter run with a time of 26.41.
Shannon Getchen earned a second place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 47 feet one inch. Jami Rodes earned a top-three finish in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:51.55
Magnotte crossed the finish line first in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.43 while Spencer Britt finished third with a time of 2:02.59. Alex Katona earned a top-three finish in the one-mile run with a time of 4:31.48 and Nathan Ziolko finished third in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:00.48.
"We will gear up for another week of solid training and see where it takes us," added Rice.
Oakland will be in action next week as they will travel to Grand Valley State on Friday Jan. 20 and Notre Dame to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday Jan. 21.
