ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team hosted the inaugural Joi Smith Intrasquad meet on Friday (Dec. 2) at the U-M Indoor Track Building. The Maize team earned the victory over the Blue team by a score of 314.5-289.5.
The meet was named in honor of former Wolverine Joi Smith, who lost her battle with cancer on Nov. 17, 2007. Michigan was split into two squads, Maize and Blue, and sported the appropriate colored t-shirts that read "Wings of Joi" on the front and "100%" on the back -- Joi's teammates and coaches remember her as a student-athlete who always gave 100 percent, on and off the track.
Throughout the event, the team collected canned good items from fans in attendance to donate to a local homeless shelter and the Salvation Army.
Prior to the meet, the team held a Kids Clinic for local children ages 4-12. Twenty-five kids participated in a series of track and field events with instruction from U-M coaches and student-athletes.
The Wolverines will officially kick off the 2012 indoor track and field season on Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. when they host the Michigan Women's Open at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
