GVSU Women Win 11th Straight Regional Title

Big Rapids, Mich. - The second-ranked women's cross country team extended their regional championship streak to 11 on Saturday (Nov. 5) with a 29-point performance to claim the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Title.
Grand Valley State placed all five of their scored runners in the top 11 of the final results with a sixth athlete placing in 12th as the Lakers dominated the field.
Leading the way was senior Rebecca Winchester who finished in third place overall with a time of 21:37.3, finishing 10 seconds behind the overall winner.
Winchester's third place finish started off a streak of four straight Lakers in the standings as GVSU placed their top four runners in the 3-4-5-6 positions of the final results.
Finishing fourth was GLIAC Freshman of the Year Rachel Clark with a time of 21:47.2. Stride-for-stride with her was senior Julia Nowak in fifth (21:47.6) and senior Jessie Vickers wasn't far behind, finishing sixth with a time of 21:58.3.
The final scored runner for the Lakers was freshman Callie Clark in 11th with a time of 22:21.4.
Junior Karie McDonald was just outside the scoring, finishing 12th with a time of 22:23.5. The final Laker in the field was freshman Jordan Chester with a solid 23rd place finish in a time of 22:57.8. All seven Laker runners finished in the top 25, meaning everyone was named as USTFCCCA All-Region honorees.
The Lakers totaled 29 team points, outdistancing Ferris State who finished with 106 points. Saginaw Valley State (135) and Ashland (193) rounded out the top four in the results as all four teams will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship.
GVSU's average time for their scored runners was 21:54.5 compared to second place Ferris State's 22:39.8 average.
The Lakers will now prepare for the NCAA Division II National Championship in Spokane, Wash. on November 19th. Start time is set for 11 a.m.
