BROOKLYN — Vicksburg's Joey Fici had been waiting a long time for Saturday.
He had all-state honors on his mind entering the Division 2 cross country state finals race at Michigan International Speedway.
Fici achieved the feat, turning in the top boys finish among Kalamazoo-area runners en route to a seventh-place finish (15:55).
"I've been training my mind for this race, almost a year now," he said. "I just stayed focused and didn't get off task today."
Fici is already looking forward to his senior season.
"I'm a junior, so I want to try and win it next year," he said. "It's a great time to be here and run, but I have to keep going. There's more."
Fici's Vicksburg teammate, Danny Hughes, ended his cross country career by earning all state honors as well. Hughes finished 30th (16:21).
Gull Lake finished 10th in the team standings. The Blue Devils were led by strong performances from senior Dallas Chase (44th, 16:34) and sophomore Sam Butler (59th, 16:43).
