Rockford girls take second at regional cross country meet
ROCKFORD GIRLS TAKE SECOND AT REGIONAL: The Rockford girl's cross country team kept their streak of state finals appearances intact as they finished in second place at the Division 1 regional at Allendale to earn a trip to next Saturday's state finals.
Three points separated the top three teams at the regional with Hudsonville finishing first with 57, Rockford second with 59 and Grand Haven third with 60.
"We had a real good day," Rockford coach Ben Watson said. "It was a very competitive and close regional. Three points separated first from third place. I was very proud of how our girls ran."
Senior Taylor Manett led the way for not only the Rams but the entire pack as she finished first overall in a time of 17:29.7. Manett also set a new course record.
"Taylor had a great time," Watson said. "She is very, very competitive and is looking for a top-three finish at the state meet."
The Rams also received strong efforts from Jane Hawks who finished seventh overall in a time of 18:48.4 followed by Morgan Harney (16th, 19:34.4), Kerianne Schoff (17th, 19:37.1) and Natalie Napolillo (18th, 19:39). Hawks, Harney, Schoff and Napolillo all recorded personal-best times.
Rockford has qualified for the state meet every year since 1997 and has finished now lower then sixth in every year since 1997 at the state meet.
"It's going to be real close just like the regional meet," Watson said. "There are a lot of good teams who are all close together. We could finish anywhere from fourth to ninth place."
