SPARTA BOYS TAKE SECOND AT REGIONAL: The Sparta boy's cross country team picked a fine time to turn in its best effort of the season as it placed second at the Division 2 regional at Benzie Central.
All seven of Sparta's runners turned in personal-best times as the Spartans totaled 61 points to finish second behind Cedar Springs.
"They ran extremely well," Sparta coach John Thomas said. "All seven of our runners ran their best of the season. Our top four runners made it on the top-ten board that we have in our gym. We really ran well and I'm quite happy."
Brandon George led the Spartans as he finished eighth in a time of 16:09.81 followed by Tom Willet (9th, 16:11.19), Adam Birkeland (10th, 16:14.09), Austin Jacobson (12th, 16:20.87) and Jonathan Delodder (22nd, 16:44.90). Jacobson ran his fastest time by 31 seconds and earned the ninth-spot on the Sparta record board. Freshman Carter VerSluys was 25th in 16:50.75 while Nicholas Hosmer was 44th in at time of 17:20.46. VerSluys' time was also one second off the fastest time ever posted by a Sparta freshman.
"We're really running well," Thomas said. "We know Cedar is the team to beat at state but we are pretty darn close to them."
