EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team wrapped up action this afternoon at the 31st Annual Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State University.
While no team scores were kept for the event, several EMU runners showcased impressive individual performances, most notably Terefe Ejigu's (Mount Cook, Wellington-Wellington College (New Zealand)) first place, 24:23 finish on the 8,000-meter Forest Akers East Golf Course. The junior maintained a 4:55 pace to top a considerable 257-participant field, finishing three seconds ahead of Central Michigan's Tecumseh Adams to take the individual title.
The senior class pulled its weight this week with top-20 performances, a significant improvement that helped the Green and White this afternoon according to Head Coach John Goodridge.
"We are a much better team than our first competition two weeks ago,” said Goodridge. “And this is due to the results of our two seniors.”
Senior Captain Austin Hendrix (Sylvania, Ohio-Northview) was the next EMU runner to complete the course, taking 12th place with his 24:52 effort this afternoon.
Cole Sanseverino (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) followed eight seconds behind Hendrix in 15th place. The senior maintained a 5:02 pace for a 25:00 overall time.
Sophomore Grzegorz Kalinowski (Torun, Poland-Nicholas Copernicus University) concluded the top-20 finishes for the Eagles with his 18th place performance at the Spartan Invite in 25:05.
The Eagles will next participate at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind., and Goodridge anticipates his to continue to improve as he allows more athletes to race in the event.
“I held out two athletes this week,” said Goodridge. “They should help us improve again in two weeks when we race at Notre Dame."
The Notre Dame Invite is scheduled for Sept. 30. The event is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
