NEW ORLEANS - Five Lake Superior State athletes have qualified for the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which begin May 24 at the Neta and Eddie DeRose Thunderbowl in Pueblo, Colo.
Leslie Mitchell, Sashawna Bennett, Jason Brenton, Ben Charbonneau and Justin Balczak have qualified in eight events. Their goal is to finish in the top eight in their events and earn All-America recognition.
"This is the most athletes qualified for the national meet in school history," LSSU coach Matt Sparks noted. "All five athletes are ranked in the top 10 in the nation."
Mitchell is ranks seventh nationally in the 100-meter hurdles (:13.62), ninth in the 100-meter dash (:11.78) and 14th in the 200-meter dash (:24.14). Bennett is ranked sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (:13.51) and 21st in the 100-meter dash (:11.87).
For the Laker men, Brenton is ranked seventh nationally in the triple jump (15.35 meters), while Balczak is seventh in the decathlon (6,917 points). Charbonneau is 10th in the javelin (64.35 meters).
Brenton won the 2012 NCAA Division II Indoor Championship in the triple jump in March, and Balczak was 10th in the indoor heptathlon.
Charbonneau, a three-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference javelin champion and USTFCCCA Academic All-American, missed qualifying for the outdoor nationals by one spot in 2011.
