MOUNT PLEASANT - Resting many of the athletes who are set to compete at next weekend's Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Central Michigan's men's and women's track and field teams still combined to win nine events at Friday's Jack Skoog Meet.

"We had a lot of athletes tonight who were getting ready for the conference meet, and we had some athletes who were competing as part of their preparation for the outdoor season," said CMU director of track and field/cross country Willie Randolph. "Tonight was about trying to move forward, and we had a lot of really positive things happen. Ryan McCullough in particular had a great throw that will move him up in the conference and national rankings.

"Now, we're just focused on the main thing we've been working toward all season, and that's the conference championship meet."

Highlighting the Chippewas' effort were the men's field event performers. CMU finished first in five of the six events and placed one-two-three in two of the events.

Kevin Mays, one week removed from his school-record toss of 71-11 in the weight throw, again went over 70 feet with a toss of 70-9 Friday night. He won the weight throw and was followed by McCullough in second (personal-best 65-4) and Calvin Jackson in third (personal-best 59-5).

CMU also finished one-two-three in the high jump. Andrew Kruskamp was first with a leap of 6-9, Jacob Behmlander was second (6-7) and Kevin Bacon was third (6-5).

Bacon also took first in the long jump (23-3 1/4), while Josh Kettlewell won the pole vault (16-8 3/4) and George Flanner was first in the shot put (51-0).

On the track, Jason Drudge won the mile in 4:26.91, while runner-up finishes went to Brandon Piligian in the 60m hurdles (8.58), Nathan Sanchez in the 800m (1:57.25) and Curtis Mitchell in the 200m (22.76).

CMU's women's team produced three event winners: Emily Dienhart in the long jump (17-8 3/4), Misha Lamphere in the high jump (5-4 1/4) and Tamica Harbour in the 60m hurdles (9.00).

Runner-up finishes in the women's meet went to Kelly Morrissey in the pole vault (11-7 3/4) and Megan Heffner in the long jump (16-10).

The Chippewas travel to Akron next weekend for the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. The two-day meet begins Friday at 11 a.m. and resumes on Saturday at 10 a.m.
