C. Fred Joslyn second at the Marine Corps Marathon
Rochester Hills, MI, October 27, 2008—Hansons-Brooks (powered by Saturn) athlete C. Fred Joslyn ran a near two-minute personal best en route to a second place finish at the 33rd edition of the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. on Sunday morning.
Joslyn entered the race looking to become the first male Hansons-Brooks athlete to win a major marathon. Last July, Yolanda Flamino brought home the program’s first marathon crown with a first-place finish at the San Francisco Marathon.
To do so, he would have to beat two returning champions, among others; and, he would likely need a personal best on the hilly Marine Corps course. His previous personal best was 2:25:34—from the 2007 Steamtown Marathon.
As expected, the two early climbs on Lee Highway and along MacArthur Boulevard winnowed the lead group down to five athletes. The pre-race favorites—Ethiopian Tamrat Ayalew (2007 Champion) and Ruben Garcia (2005, 2006 Champion) faltered off the back early—guaranteeing that a new champion would be crowned from this select group, which included Joslyn and University of Virginia All-American Andrew Dumm (Arlington, Virg.).
Joslyn exchanged leads with the others as the course flattened out along the Potomac, before Dumm made a strong move off the front at twelve miles. The Virginia alum extended his lead to over a minute in just three miles, and then held on to win the 33rd Marine Corps Marathon in 2:22:44.
Joslyn fought back to within 200 meters by the 24th mile, but couldn’t bridge the gap to Dumm over the final two miles, before finishing in a personal best 2 hours, 23 minutes, 54 seconds.
