Women finish second in Big East Track

NOTRE DAME WOMEN FINISH SECOND AT BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIPS
Tameisha King, Lauren King win in second day of competition, but Miami
sprinters keep Irish from second straight title.
Syracuse, N.Y. - Lauren King won the mile convincingly and Tameisha King won
the 60-meter hurdles as the Notre Dame women's track and field team finished
second at the Big East Indoor Championships at the Carrier Dome. Miami won
the meet, scoring 157.5 points, many of them in the sprints, followed by
Notre Dame with 120 points. Georgetown was third (78), Pittsburgh was
fourth (57), and West Virginia finished fifth with 56.5 points.
Tameisha King, a senior, posted an NCAA championship qualifying time of 8.39
seconds, winning the event by .01 seconds over Miami's Sharianne Lawson.
She won her first individual Big East title, and third overall. King was a
member of the 2000 and 2001 4x100-meter relay teams that won Big East
titles. King also placed fourth in the long jump (6.13m, 20' 1.5") and
seventh in the 60-meter dash (7.65).
Sophomore Lauren King was the other Notre Dame athlete to capture a Big East
crown on Sunday, as she won the mile with an NCAA championship qualifying
time of 4:46.90. The next closest finisher was Fiona Crombie of Providence
College at 4:52.01.
Molly Huddle followed up on her stellar mile in the distance medley relay on
Saturday with a second place finish in the 3,000 meters on Sunday as she
crossed the line in 9:18.24. Senior Kymia Love also had a big day for the
Irish, posting an NCAA qualifying time of her own in the 400-meter dashwith
a time of 54.79 seconds, .02 seconds out of first. She also added a fourth
place finish in the 60-merter dash (7.59).
Other Notre Dame athletes scoring in the meet were Emily Loomis, a
sophomore, who placed second in the high jump, with a height of 1.79 meters
(5' 10"). Loomis' mark was a season best and an NCAA qualifier. Freshman
Petra Dankova was third in the triple jump leaping 12.67 meters (41' 7") an
NCAA qualifying distance. Junior Kristen Dodd who placed fouth in the
400-meter dash in 55.72 seconds. Freshman Stacey Cowan finished fourth in
the high jump, clearing a height of 1.73 meters (5' 8"). Junior Jennifer
Kearney jumped 1.67 meters (5' 5") to finish sixth in the high jump.
Sophomore Tiffany Gunn was seventh in the 500 meters, posting a time of
1:13.86. Junior Mehan Johnson placed eighth in the mile (4:58.85). Senior
Jamie Volkmer followed up on her win in the pole vault Saturday with an
eighth-place finish in the triple jump (12.25m, 40' 2.25").
The Irish are back in action in two weeks at home, as they host the Alex
Wilson Invitational on Friday March 7th, and Saturday March 8th.
