MICHIGAN RUNNING NEWS

WHAT ARE THE PROSPECTS FOR ALAN WEBB?

It's no secret: high-school mile record holder Alan Webb is leaving the University of Michigan and college track. Webb achieved All-American status in the NCAA Division I outdoor 1500, won the NCAA Big 10 Cross Country Championship and placed 2nd in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Cross Country meet in his Freshman Year. Alan Webb, however, is not about placing second. Discouraged with his college running, Webb announced Monday that he was leaving the University of Michigan, retaining Ray Flynn of Flynn Sports Management as a long-term advisor and planning to resume training with high school coach Scott Raczko. Webb will attend classes at George Mason University, but will not join the George Mason track team. (Source: David Monti, Race Results Weekly)

Last summer, Hal Higdon urged Webb and Dathan Ritzenhein not to "waste four years of their competitive careers running college races." (http://michiganrunner.com/0801/HIGDON.html ) What do you think? Is Alan Webb making the right moves toward a successful professional running career? Should he have been more patient? Let us know; send your comments to [email protected].
