BROE, BAKER, CAMPBELL HEAD FOR 8K US TITLE IN CENTRAL PARK
Allen Steinfeld, President and CEO of the New York Road Runners Club
(NYRRC), thinks Tim Broe is the man to beat in the 8K US national
championship race. The 8K hasn't been contested at the national level
since 1993. In a telephone interview arranged by host club NYRRC, Tim
Broe downplayed his chances, saying he hoped to be in the top 3. "Abdi
[Abdirahman] is the guy to beat," he said. "8K is still a long way for me.
I'm looking forward to running in Central Park."
Meanwhile, during the interview with Broe, elite athlete coordinator David
Monti announced that the top Michigan road racer of 2001, Kyle Baker, will
also run. Baker shares the Michigan Runner of the Year title with Amy
Wing. Kyle Baker can be a threat at distances from the mile to the 10
mile. With his road racing experience, we expect Baker to challenge for
the lead and the win.
And that's not all; Hanson's Jeff Campbell finished fourth and in the
money at Sunday's Shamrock Shuffle 8K in Chicago. Campbell, along with
additional Hanson Team members, Jason Hubbard, Trent Briney, Brian Sell,
Joe Gibson and Rickie Brinker will travel to New York for the April 6
race.
BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY DROPS MENS TRACK AND FIELD
30 years ago, Bowling Green State University's Dave Wottle won the 1972
Olympic Gold Medal in the 800 meters. Rather than celebrating Wottle's win
this summer, the University decided to end the Men's Track and Field
program-one of the highest profile programs ever to be cancelled. Bowling
Green's President Sidney Ribeau and Athletic Director Paul Krebs cited
economics, competitiveness, and participation opportunities in reducing
the number of men's sports. The University will no longer sponsor men's
swimming/diving, men's tennis and men's indoor and outdoor track and field
after this academic year. For the official statement, see

The Michigan Runner kicked off its 2002 Race Series at the Spectrum Health
Irish Jig 5K in Grand Rapids, March 16. Defending champion Kyle Baker
make his 14:56 look easy to take first place for the third consecutive
year. Masters runner and Irish Olympian, Monica Joyce, ran an incredible
17:00 flat to win the overall title. Laurie Decker ran 18:31 to win the
women's masters race. Ann Arbor's Dave Furey's 16:00 flat took the masters
title.
Second and third place runners in both the open and masters categories
also won points toward the Michigan Runner of the Year title. Ann Stewart
(2nd), Janet Becker (3rd), Kevin Smith (2nd) and Aaron Usher (3rd) earned
points in the open division. Theresa Kopach (2nd), Kathy Anderson (3rd),
Brian Olsen (2nd) and Ron Zywicki (3rd) earned masters points. For
complete results see http://www.classicrace.com.
STAMPEDE 1 MILE NEXT UP ON MICHIGAN RUNNER RACE SERIES
The UM Heart Care/UM Business School Stampede of Races on April 6 at
Dominos Farms in Ann Arbor is the next race in which runners can earn
points toward the Michigan Runner of the Year title. The competitive one
mile race is the first one mile race in which a runner can earn those
points. For details and online registration see

CAMPBELL, VERRAN, WEHRMAN, MCGREGOR FINISH HIGH IN SHUFFLE
The LaSalle Bank Shamrock Shuffle 8K in Chicago March 24 attracted over
17,000 runners and offered prize money to the top five overall and masters
runners. Hanson Team members took home some of that cash; Jeff Campbell of
Utica, Michigan, wasn't on the elite athlete list for the race, but he
will be next time. Jeff finished in 23:26 for 4th place; Clint Verran
clocked 23:40 for 6th place and Chris Wehrman ran 23:44 for 10th place in
one of the most competitive races on the Spring schedule. University of
Michigan cross country star and 1998 NCAA cross country champion Katie
McGregor took 3rd place in 26:49. McGregor lives in Minnesota now. Phil
Bedford of Midland, Michigan was the top Master runner in 24:24.
HERB LINDSAY, PATTI DILLON ELECTED TO RRCA HALL OF FRAME
Alexandria, VA - (March 22, 2002) - The Road Runners Club of America
announced that runners Patti Dillon, 49, of New London, Conn. and Herb
Lindsay, 48, of Fremont, Mich. have been elected to the RRCA Hall of Fame.
Known for their aggressive front running, Dillon and Lindsay were top road
racers in the late 1970s/early 80s as they won numerous top events and
produced records and all-time performances. Dillon - known then as Patti
Lyons/Catalano - won the Honolulu Marathon four consecutive times from
1978-1981 and also won the Montreal Marathon, but it was her three
back-to-back second place finishes at the Boston Marathon (1979-81) that
would make her a household name.
In his prime, the 1978 World Cross Country team member had several stellar
road race performances. In 1979, Lindsay won the Old Kent River Run with a
25K world best time of 1:14:29. He also won the 1980 Midland Run 15K and
set an unofficial 10-mile record at the Trevira Twosome finishing in 46
minutes flat. In 1981, Lindsay headed back to Old Kent where he bested
himself finishing in 1:14:09. He also had a U.S. record win of 1:01:47 at
the Maple Leaf Half-Marathon and, in the process of setting a half
marathon record, set an unofficial 20K time of 58:38.

RITZ 24TH, MOORE MID-PACK AT WORLD XC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Abdi Abdihakem was the first American to finish the men's long 12K race at
the World Cross Country Championships in Dublin, March 23-24. His time was

Dathan Ritzenhein, the 2nd American to finish, ran a 36:39 for 24th place
in the field of 134 finishers. Ritzenhein's University of Colorado
teammate, Jorge Torres, was the 1st American in the short 4K race in
12:35. The USA 4K champion, Tim Broe, did not race in Dublin. Bekele
Kenenisa was the story of the meet, winning both the 4K and the 12 K
senior men's races.
USA junior champion Tim Moore finished 54th, 25:47, in the middle of the
pack behind the men's winner, Gebremariam Gebre-egziabher, from Ethiopia.
