BROE DEFENDING 4K TITLE AT 104TH WINTER NATIONAL X-C CHAMPIONSHIPS With the American Record in the indoor 3000 meters on his resume, Tim Broe is the guy to beat in this weekend's Winter National Cross Country Championships in Vancouver Washington. The Winter Nationals also serve as the trials for the World X-C Championships in Dublin, Ireland, March 23 & 24th. Tim won the 4K senior men's race in 2001 and is currently training with Ron Warhurst in Ann Arbor. Also entered in the 4K are Michigan Runner of the Year 2001, Kyle Baker, former Rockford star Jason Hartmann and 3 members of Team Hanson: Clint Verran, Joe Gibson and Emry Carr.

Dathan Ritzenhein, 2001 bronze medallist in the 2001 Junior Men's World Championship 8K, has moved up to the senior ranks. He'll be running the Senior Men's 12K. Ritz's Rockford teammate Kyle Fujimoto and 2001 Footlocker Champion Tim Moore will run the Junior Men's 8K. Katie Danyko of Sterling Heights, Michigan will run the Junior Women's 6K.

The red and yellow Team Hanson colors will be much in evidence in the 12K, too, as Chris Wehrman, Brian Sell, Jason Hubbard, Richie Brinker and Trent Briney will join Verran, Gibson and Carr for the 12K men's race.

ROCKFORD PROGRAM IS BESET BY CONTROVERSY
Rockford High School cross country and track and field programs have been models for the nation. The coaches, the parents and members of the North Kent Running Club have supported successful winter indoor and summer training programs for Rockford kids. Late last week, the Grand Rapids Press broke the story that one coach has resigned and others are threatening to do so. The issue is that one coach was giving over-the-counter vitamins and pain-killers to kids despite school policy against dispensing these. We are sad about this turn of events, particularly because we've seen the Rockford kids so work hard for their success. The Rockford school board meets next Monday night

CORRECTION: HALF MARATHON TRAINING WILL MEET AT U OF M TRACK
Correction: Kathleen Gina's Two Dogs Half Marathon Training Program will meet at the University of Michigan outdoor track, next Saturday, February, 9 at 9:00 am. The sixteen week half marathon program is geared toward the Dexter Ann Arbor Half Marathon. Contact Kathleen Gina at [email protected]. The weekly group runs will not meet at Gallop Park as Michigan Running News reported last week.
