Tips to get you started or keep you going:

First timers: Get a physical to make sure you’re OK to proceed.
Equipment: Head over to you local running specialty shop and get fitted with a running shoe that will work best for you. Choose comfortable clothing, sun glasses and a hat will help you through the heat of summer and ready for race day.

Courses: Stay away from cement and traffic if possible. Blacktopped roads are easier on the knees and legs. Hard packed trails are ideal.

Routine: It usually takes about three months to develop and maintain a routine. This will help you stay with your program.
Competing: Don’t wait to the marathon to run a race. Use shorter distances to help you feel comfortable being in a racing situation. The more you race the less nervous you will be before the gun goes off. It’s also a good place to test out your equipment and find those chafing spots.

Hydration: Over hydrating is a serious problem; under hydrating is only a temporary situation. Drop the fuel belts during races. Volunteers will give you all the fuel you’ll need and pouches just add weight and more time on the road.

Head Phones: Some newcomers can’t seem to live without them. You will race better when you’re focused on your breathing and mechanics. You can’t do that with the distraction of an iPod. Plus you miss out on some of the social experiences of the race and a connection with the outdoors.

Long Runs: Running over 15 miles can help you mentally prepare for the marathon. Find a running partner to help you through it. Better yet, join a running club or sign up for a running store training run.

Double Workouts: It’s the cornerstone of my training programs. Try two runs in one day rather than one long run. You'll get more out of the effort and reduce the chance for injury too.

Self Talk: Repeat key words to help you get through the rough spots. Use mantras like patience, relax, smooth and be fresh to overcome bad patches that occur during a run or race.

Confidence: If you do your homework and correctly assess your abilities you’ll have the confidence to accomplish your goals.
