Detroit Cesar Chavez High SchoolA history of running at Redeemer and the present and future of running at Chavez! The history of cross-country running at Redeemer was rich and illustrious and included a Class B State Champion in 1928, numerous league and conference titles and 1 regional title in 1999. The Archdiocese of Detroit closed Redeemer in the Spring 2005 after 120+ years of making a difference in the lives of young people. In the Fall of 2005 the Redeemer cross-country coaching staff, joined by 3 former Redeemer runners and 25 new Chavez runners (boys and girls) picked up where running success left off at Redeemer by starting a cross-country team at Chavez High School. The Chavez team runs/trains at Patton Park, like the Redeemer teams of old. Runs throughout the city, including to and from Belle Isle, Greektown and Hart Plaza are still staples of our training - just like they were at Redeemer. Cesar Chavez High School is located on Waterman Avnue (off Vernor) in a state of the art $10 million dollar high school which was completed in 2002. Our mascot is the Aztec Eagle - the symbol used by Cesar Chavez and the farm workers union in their quest for dignity and respect. Our motto for the school is "Si Se Puede!" (Yes, We can!). Chavez is a fantastic school in a multi-cultural community and provides an education that is outstanding. While Redeemer may have closed, the spirit, hopes and dreams of the community remain. Dave Domiguez, 2006 senior, former Redeemer runner/now Chavez runner says it best when he states "We're Still Here" - our response to the closure of the once great Redeemer High and the success and future of greatness at Chavez.
