Tom ended up in 81st place in a time of 2:27:44 at the trials. Read on to find out his thoughts on his race.
RM: What are your thoughts on how you ran at the Trials? What would you have done differently? TG: I didn't run my best as I was too agressive in the early stages. After 3 miles, I was in a pack that started to click off 5 minute miles. I went for it but paid the price later. Sometimes in running you have to gamble a bit, but unfortunatly this time I lost.
RM: What information/knowledge do you feel like you gained from the marathon trials? TG: It was a race unlike any other I have ever been a part of. It was such a tremendous experiece that I benifitted from in many ways. I learned a lot about the organization and what it takes to put on a world class marathon. As always, I don't think I can comprehend fully what I learned until my next marathon.
RM: How did you like the Central Park course setup and the rest of the organization of the NYRR?TG: The NYRR treated us like Kings. The course was tremendous because of all of the people and the atmosphere. It was basically like a paved XC course for 26.2 miles.
RM: When will you next run another marathon and what would you like to accomplish in that?TG: I'm trying to figure that out at the moment. I will most likely run a fall marathon in 2008. I'll stick to the roads this spring for a few 12k's, a half marathon, and hopefully the 25k in Grand Rapids.
RM: What was your recovery like after the trials? How much time off and did you do any cross training?TG: I took 2.5 weeks off. My recovery consisted of all of the things that I couldn't do when I was training for the race. I went mountain biking, consumed a lot of frosty beverages, and went to Las Vegas. Now I'm back on the trails and the legs feel great.
