Since his election almost four years ago, Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis has had a great vantage point watching runners from the starting line stage. “It can get a bit cold standing around but you forget about that once the starter’s horn sounds. It’s an amazing experience seeing thousands of runners take off.”
Francis has served with Mayor Kilpatrick on many of Detroit’s major events such as the Super Bowl, All Star game and Grand Prix. “Sometimes we forget how significant the marathon is to both sides of the border. It has really become a major event.”
“The marathon provides an experience that is unique to this region, to be able to run in two counties especially with an underwater mile makes it special.”
“The event speaks to what we want to promote, that Detroit and Windsor is a two nation destination for runners and families coming to the marathon. You can come here and get the benefit of two different countries. We are fortunate that within a very small radius we have a lot to offer. “
Mayor Francis noted the variety of restaurants on both sides of the border. “If you think of all the eating districts we have such as Mexicantown and Greektown on the Detroit side and our Little Italy and Chinatown, we rival centers like New York City. “
“Our parks and riverfronts in Windsor are second to none. I believe we have the best riverfront in North America in terms of being able to explore it from one end to the other. Our view of Detroit’s skyline both during the day and night is spectacular. That’s why the runners love the serine view from the Ambassador Bridge.”
The mayor has stayed in shape through running and has been involved in a number of charity races organized by the Running Factory and Gary Belanger, although he hasn’t challenged Mayor Kilpatrick to a 5km dual.
“We’re proud of our history with the marathon. It’s incredible to see how it’s grown and it helps tell the story of the uniqueness of our region.” Canadian runners represent almost 10% of the field, the largest contingent outside of Michigan.
City Hall, Public Works, the Police, Parks and Recreation and the Tunnel are Canadian departments that all are involved in the operation of the marathon. Through their diligent work over the last thirty years runners have enjoyed a wonderful experience traversing through Windsor.
Runners love the encouragement of spectators. Over the past few years more people from the apartments along Riverside Drive have starting coming out to watch the runners. The Mayor promised that he would do his part to encourage more spectators to support runners and walkers. It would be the icing on the cake.
