The community of Central Lake will hold the fourth annual Ryan Shay Midsummer Night Run
this summer in conjunction with it’s 4th of July celebration. Shay, who grew up in Central Lake was an 11 time state champion in track and cross-country, a ten time All- American at the
University of Notre Dame, 10,000 m NCAA champion, five time USA National Champion representing the United States in competition throughout the world. On November 3, 2007, during the US Olympic marathon trials in New York City, Shay collapsed and died of heart failure due to a pre-existing condition at approximately 5 1/2 miles (9 km) into the race. Come and run one of three races 5k, 10k, or the 1 mile fun run. The 5k and 10k courses will cover roads and trails where Ryan often trained while living in Central Lake. These events will differ from most races, because they will start at 7 p.m. and not in the morning. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Ryan Shay Memorial Scholarship fund.
